Surviving and Thriving with Polio: Sally’s Story

Sally MacKay’s heartfelt, courageous, and often humorous book traces her life as a young girl stricken with poliomyelitis in the late 1940s, before the availability of immunization.

Sally speaks of her almost lifelong affliction with polio as being both an adversary and a companion, which defined her life path and molded her character. A life woven with love, resilience, and unwavering faith as she grew into womanhood as a happy mother of six children.

Sister Loretta Gillis, who lived close to Sally and was in school with her, speaks of “her great fortitude and determination as she lived her life each day.”

Including many illustrations and Sally’s moving poems about polio and about her family life, Surviving and Thriving with Polio is a testament to us all about how to overcome early adversity with fortitude and to go on to live a long and fulfilling life.
