About the Author & Illustrator: Based in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Megan Maginley is a writer, illustrator, and puppeteer. She describes herself as “a lovely autistic creative force of nature.” The Ballerina Boy is her first book and marks her debut as a published author and illustrator.
Susan Napier, MSW, in the Foreword to The Ballerina Boy writes:
I met Megan while working as an assistant at L’Arche Antigonish. L’Arche is a unique organization which provides homes and programs designed for adults with multiple abilities.
Megan joined the studio program which focuses on all manner of creating art.
Megan, who is autistic, has much to teach us and she has brilliant gifts to share. When I first experienced Megan’s Art, I was filled with wonder and excitement.
Megan creates magical, fanciful stories, which she then illustrates. I have met many of her characters and am amazed at the detail and difference in each piece.
Megan’s commitment to social justice is heartfelt.
Meeting Megan has enriched my life. She has broadened my understanding of autism and inspired me with the gift of her art.
