I was quite fascinated to read John’s memoir, “Journeys with a Thousand Heroes.” His contribution to pediatric oncology and to the arts in medicine is incalculable. I am moved by his deep compassion for dying children and impressed by his uncanny ability to create such a readable memoir, given its highly technical nature. John’s young patients teach us all what it means to be heroic. This engrossing story is a must read for anyone in the fields of oncology, the arts’ contribution to medicine, and care giving.
